About
I like to make things.

I am currently working hard on a range of projects for exciting clients. I am always looking for new opportunities, and welcome projects with a challenge.

Before that I travelled the world, taking as many photos as my 8GB memory card could handle. This took me from Melbourne to Canada, America, Europe and Japan.

Previously I completed a year internship at Citrus, a design agency in Melbourne, followed by a year of working within a collective of designers in East Melbourne. I was then offered the opportunity to work for Busara, a design agency based in London, as a senior designer. I spent a year heading up projects for brands like Lacoste, Kodak and Oracle, before travelling back to Australia to build up Busara's Perth office, experiencing a new, challenging and exciting side of the business.

I began making websites for my friends bands in high school before studying a Bachelor of Design (Multimedia Design) and achieving first class honours at Swinburne National School of Design in Melbourne, Australia.

When I was little I really, really wanted to be an astronaut. Now I just pretend I'm wandering around the universe while at my computer.

Skills

I am proficient in a range of disciplines including web design (from concept to coding), motion graphics, video, print and photography. I have a range of design styles that adapt to meet the needs of a client, and am particularly interested in design that works across multiple mediums.

I like to spend my weekends taking photographs, playing guitar at open mic nights, and enjoying reasonably priced white wine.

Past Employment

Senior Designer at Busara
February 2008 – August 2008 (1 year, 6 months)

I was offered the opportunity to work for Busara in London at the end of 2007, and I moved to the UK straight away. As a senior designer I was able to take on new challenges with bigger and more exciting brands, like Oracle, NHS, P&G, Kodak and more. I took on more responsibility than I had previously, and I really enjoyed the challenge of living in a new city.

I was then asked to help the company begin a new branch in Perth, Australia, and I took it on. It was a challenging six months of finding new work, meeting with prospective clients and building a company from the ground up.

Interactive Contractor at Flash Group
October 2007 – February 2008 (5 months)

I spent time contracting for Flash Group, a young and exciting agency based in St Kilda. I worked on a number of projects for big brands, developing flash modules to existing sites and helping with banners and microsites.

Interactive Freelancer within Invision Marketing
March 2007 – February 2008 (1 year)

I spent a year working within a collective of designers in a freelance environment. This taught me to learn new skills within a ‘do-it yourself’ environment. It has expanded my knowledge of the business side of design, from managing clients, professionalism, reading, writing and planning briefs and delivering consistent results. At first I didn’t know how to write an invoice, but now I feel comfortable communicating as a designer, especially to people who are not from a design background.

Junior Designer at Citrus
November 2005 – February 2007 (1 year 4 months)

My industry placement taught me so many skills in design, from software packages to time management skills over my time in the program. I had not previously worked in a studio, and found the experience both intimidating and invigorating. When I returned to study my honours, I felt I had a knowledge base to work with that I previously would not have had, and I met and worked with so many great people while producing outcomes that pushed my personal design boundaries while still giving clients a great deliverable.

"David is simply 'awesome!' We hired David when he was living in Melbourne, even though our studio was based in London! He was exactly the sort of designer we were looking for - his skill set is second to none - web, branding, print, motion, AS3, PHP and CSS - the list goes on and on! His enthusiasm and commitment to each project helped elevate our company portfolio instantly - but more importantly for us, he became a great friend to all those who he worked with. And he is pretty darn good at the guitar!"

“I loved working with Dave. He has infectious creative energy, he's full of ideas, he's très genial, and everything he designs is chic. We worked on projects together, in our own time, that were well received, like an 'O Guide' for the company, and of course we worked on regular projects together. I've recommended him to freelance clients and they too have loved his work.”
